Theopetra: a stone wall against the Ice Age cold
Some 23,000 years ago, at the height of the Ice Age, people piled stones across the mouth of a cave.

A shelter in the limestone
About 4 kilometres from Kalambaka, on the north-eastern side of the limestone crag above the village of Theopetra, a cave opens behind an arched entrance 17 metres wide and 3 metres high. Inside there are roughly 500 square metres of floor. According to the Greek Ministry of Culture, people used the cave from the Middle Palaeolithic, around 130,000 years ago, through to the Neolithic.
Shepherds were still sheltering their flocks here until 1987. That same year excavation began, and by the time it ended in 2007 it had exposed layer upon layer of deposits, like the pages of a very long diary.
A wall against the cold
At the entrance, the excavators found a pile of stones, packed in among the rocks already there, blocking the way in. Reports from 2010, citing the Ministry of Culture, said it covered about two thirds of the entrance and had been dated by a luminescence method to around 23,000 years ago. The cave’s excavator, Nina Kyparissi-Apostolika, gives a range of 24,000 to 22,000 years in an article published in 2015.
That date falls within the Last Glacial Maximum. A study in the journal Science (2009) places the time when nearly all of the world’s great ice sheets stood at their largest between 26,500 and roughly 19,000 to 20,000 years ago. The excavator reads the wall as a protective barrier, both against animals looking for shelter in the deep cold and against extreme weather.

What the cave floor remembers
The cold left its mark on more than the stones. The geoarchaeologist Panagiotis Karkanas studied the cave’s sediments (Geoarchaeology, 2001) and identified several cold phases, with alternating freezing and thawing, including a major cold period that lasted until the end of the Last Glacial Maximum. In a paper from 2002 he notes that frequent swings in climate directly shaped the way the cave was occupied.
According to the excavator, steppe vegetation surrounded the cave in cold, dry spells, and the layers from those times hold few tools and point to use by only a handful of people. After the Last Glacial Maximum, the population inside the cave seems to have grown rapidly. Standing at the entrance, you are standing where, as the researchers see it, people raised a barrier against the cold.
Good to know
- According to the Ministry of Culture (checked 11 September 2026), the site is open 08:30-15:30 and closed on Tuesdays. Check the hours before you set off, as they can change.
- One ticket (full €5, reduced €3) covers both the cave and the Theopetra Cave Documentation and Education Centre.
- You reach the cave by steps and walkways, and inside, the visitor walkway runs above the excavated layers. Stay on it.
- Do not expect stalactites: the Ministry notes that the cave has no dripstone formations. What you come for here is the space itself and the layers of its history.
